Howth—The Perfect Day Trip from Dublin!
A thirty minute train ride from brings you to Howth, a quaint fishing village with seals, seafood, and a Sunday market. Find out the best way to spend a day exploring this charming town.
What makes the perfect day trip? For one, ease of travel! From Connolly Station in Dublin, trains depart for Howth approximately every 15-30 minutes. Buy your ticket for under €5 and hop on the DART for a thirty minute scenic train ride to Howth.
An island nation, Ireland boasts premium fresh seafood. To enjoy it in Howth is to enjoy it at its source—fishing boats fill the harbor and seafood marketplaces and restaurants line the pier. We were surprised at how many restaurants required reservations—so be flexible, or plan ahead. We nabbed outdoor seats at Octopussy’s Seafood Tapas Restaurant when it opened at 12:30 PM. Cozied up in blankets provided to cushion the picnic table seats, we feasted on raw oysters—yum!
Located near the train station, Howth Market is a great way to kick off your trip to Howth! Come on a weekend to enjoy this farmer’s market. Stalls are full of candy, fresh produce, jewelry, and international cuisine, and the storefront bakery has great coffee and pastries.
I loved walking around the pier, exploring the towns shops, and taking sealfies (haha!) with the seals that play in the harbor. There is a nice walk out to the lighthouse—families and friends stroll by and musicians set up shop on the path. The views of the harbor and water are just breathtaking!
We did a very short walk up towards Martello Tower to see a bit of the local homes and view of the waters. There is a longer walk around Howth’s Head—the Cliff Path Loop—which I would have loved to have done if we had a bit more time.
