Staying at Alfiz Hotel Boutique in Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is a bustling, romantic, colonial town, and you want to be in the heart of the historic walled city. The best thing to do is get lost in the picturesque city streets, beat the midday heat by relaxing poolside with a novel (or tropical drink!) in hand, and head out again for a sunset promenade along the walls and a meal at one of the many amazing restaurants. We did this for one perfect week in Cartagena, and the glue that held each day together and made them even more wonderful was our incredible hotel, Alfiz Hotel Boutique.

Alfiz Hotel Boutique

Set in a 17th century house, the Alfiz is a 4 star hotel centrally located in the historic El Centro neighborhood. Do you like rocking chairs and hammocks? Jacuzzis and pools? History and libraries? Tropical gardens and dining al fresco? Then Alfiz Hotel is perfect for you too!

This boutique hotel has only 8 rooms, but the amenities are truly top notch. We loved waking up to a freshly prepared breakfast, then walking right out the front door into the heart of Old Town. We took advantage of unlimited coffee and selected books from the hotel library. When the afternoon heat settled in, we welcomed a return to the air-conditioned room before lounging by the pool and in the rooftop jacuzzi.

Thematic Rooms

Alfiz Hotel’s eight rooms are all themed for different periods in Cartagena’s history. We started in the Indigenous Room on the first floor and halfway through our stay were upgraded to the Viceroyalty suite which included a balcony! Other rooms included the Conquest Room, Colony Room, Pirates Room, Independence Room, St. Peter Claver, and The Republic—excellent ways to highlight the historic property.

Our rooms were equipped with wifi, air conditioning, cable TV, an in-room safe, and—as you’ll see below—amazing bathrooms!

I loved the indigenous room. The exposed brick walls and pottery created a truly unique ambiance, and the open bathtub/rain shower was dreamy!

Lounging with my welcome cocktail in the Indigenous Room!

The Viceroyalty suite had a more austere vibe—along with the highest ceilings I’ve ever seen in a hotel room! This room came with a King bed and a gorgeous balcony that looked over the beautiful historic streets of Old Town. And again, an incredible bathroom—check out the huge bathtub!

Huge bathroom and rain shower with natural lighting!

Customer Service

The employees at the Alfiz Hotel are top notch. Everyone was so nice and truly made us feel at home. When our overnight trip to an island was suddenly cancelled and we had to rearrange our plans (a story for another post), they accommodated our need for an earlier stay. To make up for our lost island getaway, they arranged a day trip to Isla del Sol where I got to scuba dive for the first time! When we fell in love with the hotel and decided to extend our stay, the gave us a free room upgrade so that we could experience a different (larger) room and take our engagement photos on the room’s balcony! This hotel was a dream come true.

We loved taking engagement photos in this charming hotel!
